What is an RFP (request for proposal)?

An RFP (request for proposal) is a structured request document with which companies invite several providers to bid at the same time — typically four to six pages, with a clearly defined need, scope, pricing template and evaluation criteria.

For consulting services, an effective RFP covers seven mandatory fields: definition of need (problem, target state, success criteria), scope boundaries, the required senior/mid/junior mix, a day-rate table, the delivery and escalation model, the contracting route and the evaluation criteria.

Three to five providers are invited — more lengthens the process without improving quality. The response deadline is usually ten working days; for complex regulatory mandates, fifteen.

Frequently asked

How long should an RFP be?
Four to six pages. Longer RFPs filter out specialist boutiques, which won't write 30-page responses anyway.
How many providers should be invited?
Three to five. Real comparability requires at least three; more than five dilutes the quality of the evaluation.
